Feedback 2014

Dear all,

During summer 2014 I got some feedback from the students about the course which was held in autumn 2014 (beginners, level A1.2 - A 2.1).  Thank you to those answered my questions. Your opinion makes me work harder and change things to make my teaching more effective.
See your anonymous answers and my comments below!

1. Suggestopedian method efficiency in your case. Please grade from 0 to 5:

                  * 80% - 5 points, 20% - 4 points

2. Your language level at the end of the course. A) deteriorated B) remained the same C) improved slightly D) improved

                  * 50 % - D) improved slightly, 50% - C) improved

3. Drawbacks of the method. What did you not like and why?

* When working in pairs or groups we could make mistakes and not have them corrected when we had to make our own sentences. I think there was a bit too much of this 'unsupervised' pair / group work without the teacher checking our sentences / what we were saying. This meant we might have learnt incorrect ways of saying things from each other.

My comment: After every pair/group work we have a "check": the teacher asks the students to present the results of the group or pair work and immediately corrects it, if needed, saying the right version, which is repeated by the whole group. That is the way to "supervise" you pair/group work. I do not think that there is a big risk of learning incorrect grammar or a way of saying something, because each of you realizes, that you group-mates also have mistakes and you do not believe them 100% :) The idea of pair/group work is to make you speak Finnish and practice your skills. It's OK that you are making mistakes, because communication in a foreign language and learning is not about being perfect. Like in sports, you need 99 unsuccessful attempts, before you are good enough in running or jumping.

* Everything was good, We just haven`t enough hours.

* Course is too short More classes needed

* Limited time. This limitation made the teacher to be too fast most time.

* I liked the method. Only problem is not enough classes. May be we should have regular class like this.

My comment: Oh, I absolutely agree! I wish I could hold classes every day. The only problem is money. Now the funding is enough only for short period courses. My aim is to create a bigger project based on experience gained during short time courses: a suggestopedian course for 5 - 6 month, which includes CDs and printed materials for students, some study visits and, in an ideal case, an exam to test your language level. It won't be possible without you.

4. Grade the instructor’s expertise from 0 to 5.

                   * 50 % - 5 points, 50% - 4 points

5. Quality of the visual aids used: handouts, grammar cards, pictures, etc. Please grade from 0 to 5.

                    * 60 % - 5 points, 40% - 5 points

6. How would you improve the classes? What would you add or leave out?

* Make sure the teacher always checks what we are saying when we are working in pairs or groups.

* Maybe add some role playing activities so we can practice 'every day life' encounters (shopping, traveling, visiting the doctor, meeting people, job interviews etc)More written work as homework (as long as the teacher has the time to correct it with us!

Maybe more interesting to use our true names.

My comment: Using fictitious Finnish names has a pedagogical explanation. We learn how to use and pronounce different Finnish names. We need Finnish names to "build" dialogues and imaginary stories around them. Using Finnish names is a part of the method.

* The experience I have so far was good. I think smaller group is better as everyone will get involve during the classes. The way the instructor conducted and planned for the course material is good and organized, for instance, we studied one topic for a certain period of time and repeating those.

My comment: The recommended size of the group according to the method is from 8 to 16 students, usually we have something in the middle.

* Very good method at least for me.

* More space

More practical studies – like asking each learner to speak in Finnish on any given topic for between 3 – 5 minutes, the mistakes can be corrected after the speaking.

My comment: It's exactly what we are doing:) It takes from 3 to 10 minutes depending on task.

 Using more Finnish for explanations.

My comment: It's our target. The only limitation is the language level of the group. I want to be sure that everybody can understand my explanations in Finnish.

* In terms of the content, nothing - they're perfect for me and they have helped me enormously. They are at exactly the right level for me, and they focus on exactly the things I need help with, like conversation. Perfect.

7) What method of Finnish language learning would you employ in the future: suggestopedia or conventional teaching?

* Definitely suggestopedian. It really works for me - at least when Kristina is teaching! The lessons are a fun mental workout and I always feel engaged and involved in them!

* Probably both, suggestopedia and conventional teaching (especially those grammar things). Introduction to new topic in conventional and practicing using suggestopedia method

Both. More methods - more use, better result.

* With some aspects of the conventional teaching

* Suggestopedia is much better, funny and helpful

My comment: I will probably add pure grammar exercises as an extra, but not during suggestopedian parts. At the moment we do not have enough classes to add conventional grammar lessons. In our situation it would be perfect for you to attend some other Finnish course as well, where the grammar is taught conventionally.

Your comments and feedbacks are welcome any time. See also FAQ-tag notes where I answer your questions and explain things about suggestopedia.

Summary of Winter and Spring 2014

About the winter and spring season 2014

The Suggestipedian Finnish course for beginners was organized with the help of “JoMoni” (Joensuu multicultural organization) and “Silta” (immigrant center of Joensuu). The course was free of charge. The funds were provided by educational center “Ok-opintokeskus”, cultural and educational organization “Visio” and “Kansanssivistysrahasto” fund. It would have not been possible without them.

Background

Prior to winter and spring 2014 we organized a short one-month demo course in order to present the method and find out whether it will be popular with immigrants. The method proved attractive. The 1st group included 15 students. We decided to carry on.

Who are the students?

The course took on elementary learners of Finnish. Some of them only spent less than a year in Finland and were just starting to familiarize themselves with Finnish. They knew how to introduce themselves, the alphabet, some basic etiquette phrases and a small number of common words. However, understanding Finnish words in speech, as well as speaking in sentences, was usually out of their range. One important point was that the students were able to repeat Finnish sounds, words and sentences after the instructor. Some of them had been on beginners’ courses before.

The others had lived in Finland for between 1 and 6 years. Their passive vocabulary was sufficient for understanding well-articulated speech but speaking was impaired due to the language barrier as well as insufficient knowledge of grammar.

The difference in the language levels somewhat slowed down the pace and progress but, judging by the active involvement demonstrated by the students, it did  not impair communication and doing exercises in class. For those who had just started with the language, the content was entirely new which mean they had to learn vocabulary and grammar and master all four language competencies (speaking, listening, reading and writing) simultaneously. The more advanced students not only gained new knowlegde but also structured what they already knew.

IMPORTANTThe course is aimed at groups aged from 15 on. It is based on English which is used for explaining grammar and translating new vocabulary.

Contents of the Course

The content of the course is comprised of topics typical for the elementary level: meeting people, a story of yourself (languages, age, nationality), jobs, education, hobbies, family, visiting friends, getting around, visiting a doctor. The grammar part includes the following topics: conjugation (present tense, finite forms, negative forms, imperative), possessive suffixes, pospositions, genitive, locative, objective cases (accusative and partitive), consonant gradation.

Objectives of the Course

The main objective of the course is communication. Suggestopedia teaches how to communicate, teaches how to learn mainly by ear and through multiple repetition, role--playing situations and emotional and active communication support. The share of reading and writing in the classroom is minimal. Speaking and speaking again, a comfortable interaction with the teacher and other students, games, skits, presentations, and, certainly, humor.
We strive to help immigrants better adjust to life in Finland iby not only teaching the language, but also by talking about the culture, customs and mentality. Another objective of the course is to reduce the language barrier and show students that communication is not necessarily a stressful situation. It is possible to establish contact with even minimal knowledge of the Finnish language.

Effectiveness of the method

The efficiency of suggestopedia, like any other technique, depends largely on the frequency of classes. Unfortunately, we only had the opportunity to engage two times a week for 1.5 hours. But even this is sufficient to feel the progress: to learn the key rules, learn how to use the gained knowledge for communication and to stop experiencing the stress of communicating in a foreign language. The students evaluated the effectiveness of the courses by filling out an anonymous questionnaire. The assessment of students can be found in the post under the tag "feedback."

Plans for the future

In the autumn of 2014, we plan to re-apply for financial support and enroll a new group of absolute beginners, as well as to continue the classes with advanced beginners.

Oppijoiden erilainen kielitaso hidasti hieman kurssin etenemistä.

TÄRKEÄ: Suomen kielen suggestopedinen kurssi on tarkoitettu aikuisille 15 vuotiaista lähtien. Opetuskielenä on englanti, jota käytetään kieliopin selittämiseen ja uusien sanojen kääntämiseen.

Kurssin sisältö

Kurssi sisälsi alkeistasolle tyypillisiä aiheita kuten: tutustuminen, itsestä kertominen (kielitaito, ikä, kansallisuus), ammatti, opiskelu, harrastukset, perhe, vierailu, kaupungilla suunnistaminen (miten pääsee?), ruoka. Kielioppi-ilmiöistä kurssilla käsiteltiin verbien taivutusta (verbityypit, preesens, persoonamuodot, kielteinen muoto, imperatiivi), possessiivisuffikseja, postpositioita, genetiivin käyttöä, sisä- ja ulkopaikallissijoja, objektin sijamuotoja: akkusatiivi ja partitiivi sekä astevaihtelua.

Kurssin tavoitteet

Kurssin päätavoite on kommunikatiivinen.

Kurssimme kohdalla on kysymys pienestä oppituntimäärästä suggestopedian kannalta: kaksi kertaa viikossa noin 13 viikon aikana. Oppijat huomasivat kuitenkin, että tärkeimmät kielioppi-ilmiöt alkoivat tasoittua päässä ja niiden käyttö puheessa on tullut harkitummaksi. Suomenkielinen kommunikointi aiheuttaa heille vähemmän stressiä kuin aikaisemmin. Tämä on erittäin tärkeää, sillä kommukoinnin pelko hidastaa merkittävästi oppimista. Kurssilaiset ovat antaneet kurssista palautetta anonyymisti täyttämällä palautelomakkeita. Palautteiden sisältöön voi tutustua klikkaamalla blogin tunnistetta “feedback”.

Tulevaisuuden suunnitelmat

Suunnittelemme hakea lisää rahoitusta kurssin järjestämiseen myös syksyllä 2014. Tavoitteena olisi saada erilliset ryhmät ummikkoille ja edistyneemmille aloittajille (A1-A2) ja miksei myös B-tason oppijoille.

Picnic. Spring 2014

Study visit to the Botania garden and Picnic.

t
Isohelmililja

On the occasion of approacing summer suggestopedian group had an open-air lesson on Monday 28.05. We started it in the Joensuu botanical garden. The students participated in a Garden Quest. Three teams were given a task to find certain plants in the garden and to mark them on the map and to describe them according to a given example. The team that found the biggest quantity of plants won the contest.

In the quest list there were 14 plants: Särkynytsydän, karviainen, ukontulikukka, kultatyrakki, piippuköynnös, lehtikuusi, luutakuusi, valkoherukka, tyrni, kanadantuija, kielo, pihlaja, keltanarsissi and pähkinäpensas. By the way, do you know these plants? Are they trees, bushes or flowers or maybe something else? How do they look like?

After the quest we turned back to Botania cafe and checked the results of the game by answering the following questions:

- Onko kasvi puu, pensas vai kukka?
- Minkänäköinen tämä kasvi on?
- Jos kasvi on puu, onko se havu-, lehti- vai hedelmäpuu?
- Onko kasvi lääkekasvi?
- Onko kasvi myrkkykasvi?
- Jos kasvi on kukka, minkävärinen kukka sillä on?
- Jos kasvi on pensas, onko se marjapensas?

Also we learned the names of loved Finnish berries and flowers and how to decline them in plural partitiivi.

Unfortunatelly the quest-day was rainy. I thank everyone who was not afraid to get his feet wet:)

Suggestopedian teaching in Tampere

This Youtube video tells about Onnenkieli language school, where I worked during a few months in 2011. Thanks to this experience I learned that languages can be taught in very interesting and effective way.

On the video the founder of the school tells about suggestopedian teaching and learning. Also you can see students working hard, as we do:)

Here is the website of Onnenkieli language school. There you can read more about suggestopedia and see a lot of pictures of the studying process.

The rules for course participants

1.  Please, do not miss lessons without reasonable excuse. The course is more effective, when we work within the same group, with the same people regularly. If you suppose that you will have to miss some classes, I would recommend you to wait for another course which would fits you best according to the schedule and let another student take a place in a group.

2. If you are not able to come to the class – let the teacher know in advance. It is important to know the number of students at each class beforehand.

3. Being friendly and open-minded is extremely important point during the course. The group is our team, we do not learn separately, but all together. Everyone should feel comfortable and free during the course.

4. Only teacher is allowed to correct mistakes of the students or help with making a phrase.

5. Do not be late for the class. The doors get closed as soon as we start a lesson. The point is that latecomers draw students' and teacher's attention away from the lesson and make it blow over. That is why the teacher cannot get switched over to open the door every time when another latecomer comes.

6. Please, do not use mobiles during the lesson. Finnish language and I need all your attention.

Today's lesson is canceled :(((

This video will help you in the next lesson. Watch the video, translate it for yourself and repeat it phrase by phrase 3 times. Repeat the phrase only if you understand what you repeat:) Concentrate your attention on what  you are doing and repeat with feelings and gestures! Jutta ja Anssi ovat kivoja)

Kevään ryhmä 2014. The Spring Group 2014

Moi!

First of all I want to thank everyone for the lesson on Wednesday. As I said, the lesson was full of challenges: the huge group, too little space, different level of Finnish.... But I'm very glad, that everyone could come and try.

We continue on Friday 04.04. 2014 at 16.30. in a group of 14 people.
The "old" students, who started in January are in priority :) 10 "old" students confirmed participation for Aplil and May.

The same level of Finnish in the group makes the course more effective and comfortable. The rest 4 new participants have almost same backrgound in Finnish as old students of the group.

It means:
  • have stayed in Finland from several months to 2 years
  • studied some Finnish before and are on the level A1-A2

Those 4 new students will get my mail: "Tervetuloa kurssille!"
Those new students who unfortunately are not accepted will also get a mail from me:)
Those people who missed the 1th lesson on Wednesday should wait for the next course (probably in Autumn):(

I would like to teach all of you, but it's not possibe right now :( I will keep your contacts and will inform you about the basic course for very beginners (less than the level A1), if we will have one in Autumn.

Some students who came on Wednesday had higher level of Finnish than is needed for that course. I'm also planning to develope the course for B level next year. All information about new courses you can find in my blog.
